2020 Ford Focus Active will rival the Subaru Crosstrek

Last week Ford announced that it’s killing off most of its car lineup, with the only cars left being the Mustang and the new Ford Focus Active. While the Focus lineup in the U.S. has been gutted, the new Focus Active will keep the Focus somewhat alive, but what exactly is it?

Luckily Ford unveiled the new global Ford Focus ahead of its announcement about the big changes to its U.S. lineup. So we do know a little bit about the Focus Active. While the Focus has rivaled models, like the Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla for years, the 2020 Focus Active will take a slightly different route.

As its name suggests, the Focus Active is designed for buyers that have a more “Active” lifestyle. To create the Focus Active, Ford took the new Focus hatchback and added just over an inch more ground clearance, extra body cladding and some fake skid plates to give it a “crossover” label. While the Focus Active isn’t a true crossover, it’s biggest rival will be the Subaru Crosstrek.

Ford has yet to confirm what will power the Focus Active in the United States, but it will likely be its new turbocharged 1.5L three-cylinder engine, which could have either 148 or 180 horsepower. We also don’t know yet if the Focus Active will offer all-wheel drive.

The 2020 Ford Focus Active will be imported to the U.S. from China starting in mid-2019. In the meantime if you want to get your hands on the outgoing Focus, especially the Focus ST, you’ll want to act fast. Production of the current Focus ends in May of this year.
