Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport concept previews a 5-seater Atlas

Volkswagen will soon expand the Atlas lineup with the addition of a new smaller and more coupe-like five-passenger version. To preview the new crossover, VW has unveiled the Atlas Cross Sport concept at the New York Auto Show, which is a pretty close look at the production version.

The Atlas Cross Sport concept is based on the same MQB platform as the seven-passenger Atlas, but it’s 7.5 inches shorter with the same wheelbase. The near-production Atlas Cross Sport concept features a more coupe-like profile and sportier look than the regular Atlas.

The concept is powered by a 355-hp plug-in hybrid drivetrain that can travel up to 26 miles in electric mode. The Atlas Cross Sport concept uses the same 3.6-liter V6 engine as the Atlas, but it’s paired with two electric motors. Energy for the motors is supplied by a 18.0 kWh lithium-ion battery housed in the center tunnel. The Cross Sport concept can reach 60 mph in just 5.4 seconds and has a top speed of 130 mph. The Atlas Cross Sport concept can be driven in any of five modes: E-Mode, Hybrid, GTE, Off-road or Battery Hold / Battery Charge.

According to VW, a conventional mild hybrid version of the same powertrain would make 310 hp and give it a 0 to 60 mph time of 6.5 seconds.

Inside the Atlas Cross Sport concept’s interior looks more modern than the regular Atlas with its 10.1-inch touchscreen and 12.3-inch digital cockpit. Production of the Atlas Cross Sport will kick off in 2019, and will be built alongside the Atlas and Passat in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
